When parents get divorced, children often struggle to cope with the changes in their lives. That’s why a group of five fifth-grade students at Bunnell Elementary School formed Project A.C.T.E.D., which stands for Adolescents Coping Through Effects of Divorce. They have worked on the project for the past several months and were awarded Grand Champion at the Florida Future Problem Solving Competition in Orlando, Florida March 26-29. They were one of two junior division Community Problem Solving Groups from Florida to be invited to compete at the International Conference.

The five members of A.C.T.E.D. will be going to International Conference at University of Wisconsin - Lacrosse from June 7-11 to compete in the International Future Problem Solving Competition. Students will need approximately $1,000 each for airfare, room and board. Eight additional students who did well in other categories (Global Issues Problem Solving, and Scenario Writing) will also be traveling to Wisconsin and are also in need of financial assistance. They will also need to take coaches and chaperones. Thank you for your donations to help these students continue to solve problems that will make our communities better.

To help kids cope with divorce, Project A.C.T.E.D. (Jack Gilvary, Chloe Long, Grant McMillin, Zachary Bennett, and Josefine D’Elia) began a peer support group at school for students coping with divorce or other family issues at home. Students share variety of anxiety coping techniques, have a safe place to talk, and are genuinely more open with their peers than adults, and know they have someone they can go to for help. A.C.T.E.D. is hoping to make this peer support group sustainable by inspiring members who will mentor and peer support other students and by requesting the Flagler County School Board to implement a peer support group for each school to which guidance counselors can refer students.

A.C.T.E.D. has created a blog in which they can provide communication with peers and others in the community, and have provided to various businesses and organizations within the county informational brochures with resources for families who may need assistance with family issues.
