Brain Tumors & Bottles of Insulin

Donation protected

Laurie is the type of person that can MacGyver her way out of tight spots with quick problem solving. She recently lost her healthcare plan due to a legal separation. Despite a lack of funds, Laurie's lack of humor, generosity, and love for life have not waivered since her diagnosis of two growing tumors in the Pituitary Gland  of her brain, Type 1 Diabetes, Thyroid Disease, High Blood Pressure, Depression, Extreme Anxiety, PTSD, and Chronic Insomnia.

At first Laurie didn't share her news with friends or family despite her fear of upcoming medical expenses and the possibility of negative outcomes. It was only when she exhibited signs of intense migraines, body lethargy, weight gain, and a lack of sleep that people started questioning Laurie's symptoms and implored her to create a way for people who valued her friendship and who cared about her health, that she agreed to make this account.

Laurie has never been one to ask for something when she needs it. Instead, she is usually helping seven and eight year olds learn to read and solve multiplication as a licensed and National Board Certified Teacher. She earned her B.S in Elementary Education and an MeD in Curriculum & Instruction from George Fox University.

After Laurie shared her news, most people offered condolensces, prayers, good vibes, and healthy energy. Laurie chose to resign from an eight year stint as a Second Grade teacher in order to get her health under control and be fair to both herself and her students. She lost her health coverage and a lot of courage when her husband of eight years decided to sever their marriage after becoming overwhelmed. Now, Laurie had no job or income, no marital support, no monetary support for graduate school, and no health coverage.

Soon after, Laurie's pituitary brain tumor grew into two tumors and started to put immense pressure on her brain and sinus cavities, causing swelling which led to migraines. The week Laurie went in for her MRI, one of her closest friends committed suicide, slamming her with one more earth shattering loss. Now on top of Insulin, Glucose Test Strips, Insulin Pump Supplies, Thyroid, Blood Pressure, and Sleeping medications, she needed to add Clinical Depression, Severe Anxiety Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder medications to that list.

Understanding the need for medical insurance, Laurie signed up and paid the premium for new health coverage in January. She was quoted that her new plan was identical to her last and would cover exactly the same prescriptions and doctors. Unfortunately that quote was invalid, not covering her brand of insulin, Glucose Test Strips, or any of her Pump Supplies...with a plan coverage cost of over $500 a month. What good was that to her?

Laurie has maxed out a credit card, liquidated her savings account, and has supplemented her income by selling her personal belongings, cleaning and housesitting, managing an artist's inventory and marketing strategies, and from several donations from family. She made zero taxable income for the entire year of 2016.

Laurie is a survivor of many unfair life circumstances, and it is time that she allows friends, family, and charitable people to support her.

This Go Fund Me account will pay for all of her prescriptions until she can be reinstated with an insurance plan that will cover her specific medical needs and medications, deductibles, doctor and therapist bills, and will support her quality of life. It is a fact that the human body cannot live without insulin for more than 7-10 days, let alone fight off depression with suicidal ideation, anxiety, and PTSD from unsuccessfully attempting to save her friend's life. Off of the medication for three days, Laurie was admitted voluntarily to the Emergency room for Diabetic Ketoacidosis, High Blood Pressure, Sleep deprivation, suicidal thoughts, and day terrors. She made the decision to pay for the prescriptions she must take daily to (want to) survive, and has exhausted all of her options.

If you're still reading this, than I will assume that you agree that Laurie's extremely brave life journey is worth fighting for and supporting. I implore you to check your personal finances, pray and think about how you can support her and help her continue everyday to fight for her life. Whether that means donating the $5 you'd normally spend on your daily coffee, donating a larger, more generous amount, offering to pay a specific reoccurring monthly amount, or even just sharing her GFM account and story, it will help Laurie live her life to the fullest and most fulfilling as it can be. Again, please realize that even the smallest of donations add up and are gratefully appreciated!!! Thank you for your consideration.
