Fightin' Cancer w/ the Branscombs

Max Branscomb, journalist, professor and advisor for The Southwestern College Sun Newspaper, was diagnosed with mouth cancer in July. He has been through two extensive operations, both unsuccessfully getting rid of the cancer as it has moved into his jawbone.

Max is getting ready for radiation and chemotherapy treatment as soon as his last surgery heals. The treatments will take place five days a week for six weeks, probably starting in mid-November. The doctor said since he may not be able to eat, they will put a feeding tube in his stomach. His wife, Leslie, will have to feed him liquid "food" and medications every three hours.

It is a probability that Leslie will be unable to work during this time. The most that can be done for her is unemployment, and somehow they have to figure out how to afford to pay for all of the things that it takes to raise their family.

Max has insurance, but has no other options of obtaining help with this costly treatment and loss of income to his household. He makes too much for Medi-cal, too young for Medi-care and is not a veteran, so the programs that are available are not available to him. The college is working with the family to help to make sure that Max has enough leave/sick time to cover his period away from work, but this is still not enough for them to go through this unscathed. Right now their only option is to cash in his life insurance.

Although Max is healing well from his surgeries, he has had to re-learn how to walk, and talk with a tracheotomy. He is gaining strength, but is still under the constant care of Leslie. She is unable to leave his side, as there is very little that he can do himself. He has already lost more than 20 pounds, and going into chemotherapy and radiation is going to be hard on his health and the well-being of his family.

We, his students present and past, have all been touched by the teaching, mentorship, money and personal time that Max has spent on us to help us succeed. There are too many students to count that have benefited from Max's involvement in our lives. Most of us would not be where we are today if it were not for his influence on our lives. Most of all, his love and encouragement that he has dedicated to each and every one of us whether in class, in the industry or whatever paths we have chosen.

It is our goal to provide this family with enough money to cover Leslie's employment for at least a year, plus giving them the extra money that cancer costs in co-pays and out of pocket expenses which is an enormous amount of money. It would be an undeniable disaster for his family if they had to dip into property or insurances just to get through this ordeal.

Max and Leslie Branscomb are both pillars of our community, and have been for as long as we all have known them. They've done everything right for the American dream and never tried to live beyond their means. This could be catastrophic for them and that is why we are here.

We are asking for your help. Not only for his family, but for his students present and future that need his guidance. His dedication to truthful, factual journalism is unmatched. You will not find a better teacher or mentor in the journalism field, or any field of study.

We all owe Max, not only our gratitude, but now our substantial help. Please donate to help this family survive this crisis without the burden of financial insecurity.
