Help 9-Year-Old Caden Beat Leukemia

Donation protected
Please help the family of 9-year-old Caden as he receives treatment for Leukemia. His parents are self-employed, with no health benefits.

Although our goal is $100,000, no donation will be viewed as too small.

Here is Caden’s story, written by his grandmother:

On July 1, 2014, my grandson Caden’s boyhood dreams of spending the summer at the cottage, boating, waterskiing and swimming were broken. At age nine, Caden was diagnosed with Leukemia (Acute Lympholblastic Leukemia or ALL).  ALL is  one of the most aggressive cancers requiring an equally aggressive protocol spread over 3½ years.

This instantly changed his universe, as well as of all those who know and love him. It is hard to comprehend but Caden’s ability to handle the diagnosis and chemotherapy treatments with courage and inner strength has truly amazed us all.

Caden is the eldest of three loving children, and his brother and sister, while not fully understanding of the situation, are seeing just how strong their big brother is.

Given how well Caden has responded to the chemotherapy treatments, he is now in remission. This, however, doesn’t negate the fact that he must still endure 3½ years of a daily dose of cocktail medications taken orally, together with, weekly trips from his hometown in Huntsville (2½ hours away) SickKids Hospital in Toronto for numerous bone marrow and spinal fluid tests and Chemotherapy treatments.

I have started this fundraiser to assist his mom and dad with the overwhelming medical expenses, as well as the time commitments that are now the “new norm” of their daily lives and OHIP DOES NOT COVER the daily drugs taken “outside of the hospital.” In addition, the increased time in caring for Caden has majorly affected their ability to focus on their businesses and ultimately, continue to generate required income.

Based on a 2008 study in the medical journal Current Oncology and facts from Childcan , a group that supports children with cancer and their families, Caden’s mom and dad have estimated that Caden’s 3½ years of treatment will cost the family approximately $93,625.

In 2013, it cost Ontario families $10,700,000 to care for new childhood cancer cases. There are 400 new cancer cases per year in Ontario. So that is $26,750 per year, per family in costs alone.

So three and a half years of treatment looks like this:
3.5 x $26,750 = $93,625

Let’s rally around Caden and help his parents cover the costs of his battle with Leukemia.

Thank you.
