ISAT Therapy Room

Donation protected
My name is Alexis Jessop and I am a senior in my undergraduate education at The University of Utah studying psychology and nutrition. I feel very passionate about helping individuals live their best and most passionate lives! I am very excited to share my project with you! If you feel inspired by what I am creating, I will ask you to participate in the project with me.  It will be fun! Please read ahead- you won’t regret it.

My project is brought forth in partnership with the Intermountain Specialized Abuse Treatment Center (ISAT) in West Valley City. I am creating a developmental play therapy room at the center that will function as a playroom during the day and a group therapy room at night. The room will include activities used in therapy such as games, books, art supplies, dolls and figurines as well as a wall mural that I will be painting. This room will serve all clients at the treatment center, whether it is the children who are utilizing the room, therapists working with the children, or the parents who may have relief from their children while receiving services at the center. The photo included is the room as it is currently before the transformation. I am also putting together care packages for the children who receive services at the center.

ISAT has become the largest full-service provider of assessment and treatment services for abuse in the intermountain area. To date, ISAT has provided more than one million treatment hours to individuals and families affected by abuse. Clients served by ISAT include both male and female children and adolescents who are victims of various types of child sexual abuse, adult and adolescent victims of domestic violence, children who witness domestic violence, adults who were molested as children, adult and juvenile sexual abuse offenders, domestic violence perpetrators, children who molest children, siblings of abuse victims, non-offending parents of abuse victims, and adolescents and adults dealing with substance abuse issues. It is their mission to “understand and develop innovative approaches to assist in the prevention and treatment of abuse.” My project will benefit all of the populations served by ISAT in some way or another and help to expand their vision in finding innovative ways to treat abuse.

The impact of this project will be seen and felt for many years to come as long as the center is in existence. The kits will make a difference in the lives of the children now and in the future because they will remember the experience of knowing that a group of people cared so deeply for them. The quality of the experience through treatment in the special space along with the children’s kits will have a lasting effect on the children and adults who receive treatment at the center.

Those who use the room will feel the unconditional love that my team and I have for them as unique individuals. Art opens a person’s soul and can help them heal. The ISAT doesn’t have the staff or the resources to create a safe, nurturing space like the space that I am creating. As a victim of abuse during my childhood, I recognize the need that especially women and children have for such a place. My mom took me to a counselor when I was a child and I was expected to sit in a cold, uninviting room and draw out my feelings for a stranger who I did not feel like cared much for me. I want to facilitate a better healing experience for the clients at ISAT. As I create the mural, it will be an expression of my experiences and healing extended to others through my talents and my love for the community. I intend for the space to be a place where children and adults can thrive, open their imaginations, and realize that they can create a new reality for themselves that is full of bright, passionate experiences.
