Wheelchair Bicycle for Dinah

Donation protected
My name is Doug Heller. I married my wife, Dinah, in June of 1981. I was in the Air Force and we enjoyed the next several years travelling to different assignments. In August of 1984, we were notified of an assignment to Germany. We were excited! We departed Grissom AFB in Indiana and headed to our hometown, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, for two weeks of leave before going overseas for three years. While there, we packed in as much fun as we could. The highlight of our "vacation" was an eight mile canoe trip down the Delaware River. With about 1/2 mile to go, I told Dinah, who was in the front of the canoe, to look up at the airplane doing aerobatic loops. She didn't respond. I moved forward and found her sobbing and incoherent. Fearing sunstroke, my brother and I flagged down a passing powerboat, transferred her to the boat, ferried her to shore, and called for an ambulance. After being seen in the emergency room, the doctor came to me and said "What we're seeing is not good." Dinah had suffered a minor stroke, followed by a massive cerebral hemmorhage. She was only 21 years old. Fast forward to today. Dinah, 51, is nothing short of a miracle. The stroke took the use of her legs and one arm. Confined to a wheelchair, she uses just one arm to get a tremendous amount done. She takes care of our dogs while I'm at work, does as much housework as possible, and is an inspiration to all who know her. I am a bicyclist. My "release" is riding. Recently, a family member sent me a link to Frank Mobility Systems, Inc. FMS makes "The Duet Wheelchair Bicycle Tandem". This is a three-wheeled bicycle with a detachable "wheelchair". What fun it would be to include Dinah on some of my rides! Unfortunately, the Duet Electric is out of our price range. I currently groom dogs and deliver newspapers, and the price, even on sale, is cost prohibitive.  We are requesting an amount equal to the sale price of the wheelchair bicycle and shipping.  Shipping amounts to $450.  The Duet Wheelchair Bicycle is made and sold in Pennsylvania.  It's possible that we could travel to Pennsylvania, visit family and friends, and pick the wheelchair bicycle up on the way back.  That way, we would not have to pay the shipping costs.  It that were to happen, we would use the $450 shipping and donate it to another GoFundMe requestor.  Often while on rides, I "wish Dinah could see this".  We hope you will consider donating to Dinah so she can "see this"!  Thank you for your time...Doug and Dinah Heller
