Help Gabrielle & Jason fight against illness

I am Gavin a friend of Jason and I want to tell his story.

Jason is an extremely humble person. He is a loving husband and proud father.

The last 12 Months have been extremely hard for everyone but for Jason, Gabrielle and their two sons Oscar and Scott it has been a year of nightmares.
Nobody knew the extent of what this pandemic would throw at us but it has become a very lonely place for everyone never mind when you throw other life threatening health problems in the mix.

I have nothing but upmost respect for Jason & Gabrielle in what they have faced over the past 12 months and wonder what or how I would come to terms with what they have faced.  I respect their bravery and there commitment to not lay down and let this engulf them.

The following is words directly from Jason of what he and his young family have experienced over the past 12 months and expect to experience in the future.

-"Obviously, everyone is finding it hard the last year, we are dealing with all of the usual challenges but it feels a bit more intense because we have had a lot of health issues at home which has made the pandemic that bit harder and lonelier.

Back in March 2020 when all of this began was an exciting time for us. Our 2nd child was born, just as this was all kicking off. Obviously there where some challenges about delivering a baby in the pandemic. I was only going to be allowed stay for 20 min after he was born after that I had to leave the hospital and was not allowed back in to visit.

When Scott was born it was obvious something wasn’t right, he had difficulty breathing and was taken to ICU for a few days. It was very worrying as we didn’t know what affect covid would have on babies or if they could have got it in utero. When he was discharged home, we had to keep a close eye on him and take him for follow up tests and scans. We were so worried about keeping him safe during the pandemic.

When he grew stronger and healthier, we were starting to finally relax a little and then I start to feel unwell. I went to the doctor who ran some tests and was sure I had Wilsons disease, a rare genetic disorder that can have serious health issues. After lots of tests, a liver biopsy and a stressful few months waiting, we finally got the news that I didn’t have Wilsons but had non-alcoholic stage 2 liver disease. This could lead to heart attack and other serious health problems, so I had to make some drastic changes to my everyday life. It was hard news to take, at the beginning of the year we were looking forward to the birth of our second son but after months of hospital visits with him and now this things felt like they were just going wrong all of the time.

Christmas came and we were able to enjoy it but at the beginning of the new year Gabrielle felt sick. She had been breastfeeding Scott and thought she had got mastitis and a blocked duct causing a hard lump. She quickly became very unwell and the doctor sent her to a&e who admitted her for IV antibiotics. They done a biopsy and discovered the lump was actually cancerous. When the doctor told us the news the ground could have swallowed me at that point, having only lost her mother to cancer less than 3 years ago, we were worried.

The doctor said that they need to do more tests to find out what stages it’s at and what treatments are possible. So that’s where we are now, Gabrielle is in and out of hospital every week for tests. A lot of the time she is resting, asleep in bed and I’m juggling a full time job and looking after the kids all the while trying to fix my own health problems in between. The pandemic has made it hard, it’s the one time we want support from friends and family but can’t, all we can do is push on and hope for the best. "-

This story has really hit home with me as there are so many unanswered questions and practices now done differently due to the pandemic.

On March 12th I will be doing a 24 hour Livestream in aid of Jason & Gabrielle to help raise much needed funds to support them on this very difficult Journey. These funds will go towards helping them pay for childcare, expenses around treatment and to help lay the foundation of the future for their two young boys Oscar and Scott.
