Adopt a Grandparent app

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO COMBAT LONELINESS AMONGST THE ELDERLY.

At the end of March, and with the outbreak of Covid-19 becoming more real, we launched a campaign within our care homes, called 'Adopt a Grandparent'. More details can be found here - https://chdliving.co.uk/adopt-grandparent

As we were forced to shut our doors to family and friends, we realised that now, more than ever, our residents needed company and friendship.

The campaign was initially about finding virtual volunteers who would be willing to give up some of their time to video call a resident from one of our homes. To take part the volunteer would fill out an online form providing their interests and so forth. They would then be matched with a resident of ours.

Since launching the campaign just a few a weeks ago, the response has been completely overwhelming.

To date, we have had over 70,000 virtual volunteers sign-up!

The interest has been incredible, generating over 750 news articles from every major media outlet here in the UK and the US - from the BBC and Sky News through to Fox News and beyond.

The below are just a few of the media outlets to have covered our campaign:

Volunteers are signing up from all over the world...including the US, Canada, Dubai, New Zealand and more.

We've even had Hollywood actors sign-up!

However, we only have 1000 residents residing in our care homes. So we're 69,000 grandparents short!

The campaign is great, but the interest it has generated shows we need to take it to another level.

So, we want to turn ‘Adopt A Grandparent’ into a social, not-for-profit enterprise and register it with the charity commission.

We need to encourage more care homes (and other care providers) to join the scheme.

We need to launch! And get partners on board.

In order to do this, we need to create an app, which will ensure safeguarding procedures are all in place, video calls can be monitored and set-up appropriately, and any necessary admin tasks are taken care of. The app will, essentially, look to make the whole process efficient and easy to use for all. That way, everybody who needs and wants to be connected can be.

Having spoken with potential developers, we’ve been quoted a cost of around £40,000-£60,000 to create the app if it’s to include the necessary features that are required to make it work safely.

Currently, at CHD Living, our resources are dedicated to combatting coronavirus, as we take the appropriate measures to ensure both our residents and our staff are kept as safe as possible.

To make this app a reality then, and indeed turn ‘Adopt A Grandparent’ into a charity, we need to call upon your generosity to help us get it off the ground.

The coronavirus outbreak is impacting people across the world, but hitting the most vulnerable in our societies the hardest. Please, help us to help them by contributing to our fundraiser, as we look to reduce loneliness by connecting those that care.
