My mother, Kim, has been battling a rare, auto-immune disease called Vasculitis for the past three years. This disease affects many areas of the body, with symptoms related to vascular inflammation resulting in a weakened immune system. This disease is killing her and she continues the fight to this day. Vasculitis is a disease where inflammation occurs in the blood vessels, arteries and veins. Her body is suffocating, not receiving the proper blood and oxygen flow which can lead to organ damage - or in severe cases, death. There are several types of Vasculitis; Kim has Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly known as Wegener’s Vasculitis). She has survived chemotherapy treatment, has had lung and stomach surgery with another stomach surgery scheduled soon. She suffers from the full spectrum of systems this illness can produce. She has a very severe case with sinus, lung, respiratory, arthritic and stomach problems.
Kim is a loving single mom and has three kids, Frankie (me), Matthew and Katie. She is a super-mom, having sacrificed her whole life for us. She is the most selfless person I know. And if anyone is going to heaven it is my mom.
However, receiving the treatment she needs has been a challenge. She works as a full time flight attendant and can't afford to take unpaid time off from work to recover and stay healthy. She is constantly battling bronchitis and other lung infections with heavy doses of antibiotics and Prednisone. Kim flies around the country over 130 flight hours per month to pay for medical costs. For a healthy person, that is a lot of strain on the body. The work environment is far from ideal for someone with her condition. She is working in an airplane, pressurized at 8,000ft. with low oxygen, in a bacteria and virus haven for a minimum 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, 130 plus hours a month. She is always sick and can never fully recover. Her body is broken and she needs help!
Surgeries and treatment result in a lot of medical bills. My mom isn't the type of person to ask for help. She is a survivor, which is something I admire about her but she can't sustain this current course or I fear she will continue to relapse and deteriorate.
Anyone that knows Kim knows that she deserves so much better than what life has dealt her. I'm asking for help for her. Help me help my mother get better. I need her to be here when my brother, sister and I get married and have kids.
I believe in the good nature of people and our ability to help each other stand when we have fallen. I am hopeful my mom can take control of her health and send this disease into remission by your generosity and prayers. Every prayer and donation is appreciated.
