Bioarchaeological Study in Egypt

Spende geschützt
Hi guys!

My name is Kristi Bodine and I am a recent anthropology graduate of the University of South Alabama. Archaeology is my passion, especially when it gets down to the bones! I love that we are able to discover history with our own hands and use it to create a realistic picture of history for public education.

In August of 2013, I was one of only twelve accepted into a prestigious bioarchaeological field school in Tel el-Amarna, Egypt. This month-long study abroad will officially start in May of 2015 and will focus on the excavated human remains of a recently found lost ancient population. We will study these remains specifically looking for diseases or any kind of trauma that may appear in the bone so that we can get a better understanding of how diseases have progressed for future purposes.

It is rare for an opportunity to come up for a chance to be able to do archaeological studies in Egypt. This is a life-long dream of mine and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I will be working and studying under world renowned Egyptologist and retiree of Cambridge University, Dr. Barry Kemp, and renowned bioarchaeologist, Dr. Jerry Rose, from the University of Arkansas. I look up to these amazing professors and it would be an honor and a dream to learn from these two fantastic men.

The cost of for this program is high due to the fact that we have to pay tuition, a program fee, housing and food for one month, airfaire, and books, as well as, archaeological field trips to see major sights in Cairo. Having to pay student loans now that I have graduated, I cannot afford this program without help.

This program can help me get into a great graduate program so that I can continue my education and become a bioarchaeologist. My goal is to study achondroplasia (dwarfism) in ancient populations. Egypt holds the most human skeletal remains with achondroplasia in the world. This subject is very close to my heart considering my sister was born with this bone disease.  With many health complications arising from this disease and few physicians to treat them, I hope to one day help with educating phisicians and the public about the direction this disease could go possibly go in the future.

I have waited patiently for over a year for this program and I still have four more months to go. I am praying that I will finally see this dream come to pass. I love and appreciate each and every one of you!

Love, Kristi
