The Belleville Band Boosters are proud to announce that their 69-piece Symphony Band has been selected to participate in the New York Wind Band Festival, which will be held at Carnegie Hall in New York City March 6-10, 2015. This extremely competitive festival features six high school wind ensembles and two collegiate showcase wind ensembles, carefully selected from nationwide auditions. The Belleville High School Symphony Band, which is comprised of 33 male and 36 female students, is hand-selected by the Director of Bands, Mr. Nicholas Taylor. These students, who must be at least sophomores and also must be members of the school’s 260-piece marching band, make a commitment to rigorous daily rehearsals and also to weekly private lessons outside of school hours. The majority of these students have been involved the Van Buren Public Schools’ music programs since fifth grade. These young musicians make a personal investment in their own growth while simultaneously building the musicality of their band as a whole. The result is an ensemble that performs at an award-winning level and has fun doing it.

The New York Wind Band Festival’s mission is to present young musicians with an experience that offers the opportunity for musical growth while creating lasting memories. To enhance this experience for these students, the performance venue chosen for the festival is the prestigious Carnegie Hall. The Festival features an outstanding faculty of wind band professionals. This year’s Festival Artistic Director is Mr. William V. Johnson from California Polytechnic State University. Mr. Johnson will be joined by other faculty members from around the nation as these students participate in group workshops, ensemble rehearsal exchanges, and more. One adjudicated ensemble will also be selected to work with a composer from the Boston Composers’ Coalition to develop a commissioned work that will be premiered at Carnegie Hall.

For the Belleville High School Symphony Band, the cost of participating in this trip will be approximately $130,000. This includes transportation, lodging and meals, activity fees, supplies and more. As the only school selected from the state of Michigan, this trip will provide these young musicians with the opportunity to proudly represent their school, community, and state at one of the most prestigious musical venues in the world. 43% of Belleville High School students are in need of some sort of financial assistance. The Belleville Band Boosters are focusing on community support and local and national grants to help fund this amazing opportunity for these kids.  The Boosters are receiving great support from Belleville and Van Buren Township residents and business owners, but they need your help too! These kids hope to bring home a National Wind Band title – something that would be an immeasurable honor for these very gifted young musicians.  Can you help us make this trip a success?  Thank you in advance for your support!
