Rich Meyers Strong

On June 19, 2014, my brother Rich was involved in a life-altering car accident. He suffered many acute injuries like, 7  broken ribs, 2 punctures lungs, and a broken femur. The worst of his injuries left him completely paralyzed from the waist down.  We are eternally grateful he survived, and thank God every day for this gift.  However, living with a spinal cord Injury has been very difficult for Rich and for my family.  Before the accident, Rich was a dedicated police officer for the cities of New Rockelle, NY and Yonkers, NY.  He served the community of Yonkers for the past 8 years with dedication, pride, and honor. Fortunately, those attributes have carried him through this very trying time.  Bound to a wheelchair, without the ability to get out of bed on his own, Rich has already overcome countless odds, and we are confident that with continued hard work, dedication, and support, Rich will overcome these current hurdles.

Rich began rehabilitation on July 2nd at Kessler Institute in West Orange, NJ still unable to breathe on his own and nurished solely with a feeding tube.  He has made tremendous progress and is often shocking the doctors with his advancements and spirit. While initially it was impossible for Rich to breathe on his own or lift either of his arms, he can now use his ipad and make phone calls!  He truly has been an inspiration to all of us!  We are now preparing for Rich to come home to stay with our parents in Yonkers, NY until he is capable of living on his own.  We have been informed by Kessler that Rich will need specific transportation to accommodate his current situation.  This special vehicle will get him to-and-from rehabilitation, and will hopefully be his to drive when he regains full upper body strength.  Unfortunately, the minivan will cost approximately $60,000 not including monthly aide fees.  This is where we need your help.  With the assistance of Go Fund Me, we are hoping to raise enough funds to purchase this adapted minivan in time for Rich’s discharge date.   Any donation you can offer would be a tremendous help for Rich to continue to move his progress forward.  We are dedicated to his recovery and will continue to do whatever it takes to give Rich his life back.

Our friends, family, and New Rochelle and Yonkers police departments have already done so much that is above and beyond our expectations. The generosity has just been overwhelming. Without the love and support we’ve received, our obstacles would seem impossible to overcome.  We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Thank you for listening, thank you for sacrificing so much just to help our family get through this.  Your acts of kindness prove that there is so much love and compassion in the world.

We thank you all.
