Elder Care Home Repair in Kathmandu

Donation protected
Thank you to my amazing friends and family who've supported my efforts here in Nepal. Because of your generosity, The Senior Citizen Nursing Care Home in Pharping, Kathmandu, is on their way to having a new wash facility built to replace the one damaged in the 2015 earthquake.

Who I Am

My name is Alicia Demetropolis. I am a 51-year old  Washington state certified caregiver and nurse delegate. I am also certified from Rigpa in Spiritual Care for the end of life client. I have done this work for nearly 10 years.

My Journey

I am living in Nepal from September through November, doing volunteer elder care around Kathmandu. I have also begun to take food and water to the seniors living in the streets.

My current assignment is in Pharping (in the hills of Kathmandu) at the elder care center. I'm living in the center and am helping to bathe, do laundry and provide foot care for the residents. I also assist in cleaning rooms.

These people would be homeless if it weren't for this center and the generosity of the community to help support it.

But the buildings need a lot of work:
*  The roof on the wash facility may collapse any day. A new one is the equivalent of US$4,080.00
* Without an additional gate in the front, the seniors and their caregivers are not fully secure at night.
* The roof in the dorm building is rotting away.

Our eating area.

This woman cannot walk. She cannot straighten her left leg and can barely straighten her right leg. She's been with the center 10 years and has never told them her story. She hobbles around every day, does her wash, bathes herself, and never complains.

The yoga building in the background provides a small amount of income for the center every month.

The dorms on the left and the front courtyard.

Why I'm Asking for Help

The community supports this elder care center, but in the end, they're still poor and living in one of the poorest countries in the world. This center needs financial support.

My Inspiration: My Parents

That geeky little kid is me.  :)  And those are my amazing parents, who taught me compassion and a desire to learn and help others. I helped care for my father during the last year of his life, and lived with and cared for my mother for two years while she battled Alzheimer's. They're both gone now, and this is how I can continue to live the values that they taught me: By continuing to serve others who are less fortunate than us.
