Ecuador Teach Street Children

Donation protected

Hi! My name is Joshua!

I am currently a nursing student at the University of Connecticut. I went into nursing because I have a passion for health and a passion for helping people. Nursing is a very humanistic role. Nurse's are not only caring for patients, but they are global leaders, mentors, teachers, comforters, and advocates for ethical and moral outcomes.

As a nursing student I have become aware of the privilege that others may not have, and what role I will play not only in my local community but the role, knowledge, and skills I can give to my global community.

Volunteering in Ecuador means that I am giving of myself, knowledge, and skills with the full realization of the learning, skills, and deeper understanding I will receive in return from those that I will be working along side.

I will be volunteering with Volunteer HQ to provide teaching and literacy to street children. All donations will pay for lodging, meals, and materials for teaching.

Street Children

For many Ecuadorian children, school is never an option. These children spend 365 days a year working in the streets and markets, selling goods and performing with their parentsto help their families stay alive.

The Street Children Work project focuses on providing these children with some enjoyment in their lives, along with education. This project is popular among the families of these children, as it offers them new opportunities and perspectives on life that they otherwise would not have been exposed to.

On this project I will work with children of all ages and assist in providing basic school lessons, playing with the children, singing and dancing, providing hygiene awareness (such asteaching the importance of washing hands), and introducing the children to new activities and games.

I was inspired to volunteer by a number of people. The most infleuncial would be my professor Dr. Simmons of UCONN school or nursing, and my mother has not only told but set example after example that we must give of ourselves, by giving back to our communities.

I believe that we must know that our communities extend beyond our borders. We are a global community and so when and where ever time, experience, and learning can be exchanged for better outcomes we should give of ourselves.
