WORLDWIDE PARKING SPOTS' APPLICATION FOR THE DISABLED
A campaign to raise the standard of living and reduce the barriers of entry to travel by car for those living with disabilities.
THE HARD TRUTH
Nearly 15% of the world’s population, almost a billion people, live their day to day lives with a disability. A figure that is increasing in accordance to population growth.
According to a recent U.S. census 19% of the United States is listed as disabled according to a broad definition of the word.
While this on its own is unfortunate enough, most nations and businesses don’t account for this demographic when thinking about transportation.
Most people with a disability can get a driver licence. Even those who can not and drive by car with someone else should have transportation barriers reduced to minimum.
The problem is that parking spaces, especially in cities are often too narrow and too close to roads for many disabled vehicles to park in. The law acknowledges the need for handicapped/blue badge parking but also allows for companies and public parking areas to drastically under represent the population in need, saying that companies only need to provide 5% to 2% of parking spaces as handicapped/blue badge
parking spots. A far way from the 19% of the population in need.
When persons with reduced mobility make a journey they have the same expectations as other people. They expect to be able to leave their house, travel in safety and comfort and get to their destination without any difficulties. If even one component of the journey presents a barrier, then some people will might not travel at all.
OUR GOAL
We want to create a worldwide database to store information about any parking spot for people with disability. DISpot will be a worldwide platform utilizing this database to allow this demographic to quickly and easily find available spots specifically for them through the application. Simply enter your destination and watch as existing parking spaces nearby specifically for you pop up on the map with their specific locations listed.
With DISpot we want to help those with special needs to better plan their trips by car and improve their quality of life. We aim to increase comfort and mobility to anyone with a disability.
Anyone will be able to help the database grow by posting relevant parking spaces on the application. If you see a parking spot with the sign
you can add it to the database within a minute or two: simply take a photo, mark the location, register yourself and upload it to the DISpot worldwide community.
This volunteer platform will allow for data growth and spot recognition for those in need to register and access.
DISpot will be a beautifully designed, proven app built for both iOS and Android allowing for the discovery and logging of relevant parking spaces.
HOW DISpot WILL WORK
DISpot will be free of charge to anyone using it. Once DISpot is downloaded to your device users will be able to easily:
- Search for listed parking spots based on the desired location - once you click find, all stored parking spots up to 500 yards away from the location will be displayed with its own address and descriptions based on Google Maps, as well as the author of each listing’s registration.
- Register as a new user in the DISpot database and add any new parking spots suitable for disabled people with respective features (picture(s) included) that you notice.
It will be possible to review and comment every logged parking space, as well as make changes to other DISpot users contributions in order to continuously enhance the database quality.
The geolocalisation will be supported by Google Maps and GPS on your smartphone.
