Eagles' Nest Project at Wauhatchie

What Are We Doing?
Conservation education begins with experiences in childhood that cultivate attitudes of respect and wonder that last a lifetime. With that in mind, our forest school campus would like to bring local naturalist, storyteller and "bird guy" Jim Pfitzer  out to complete an Eagle Nest project with our school community before he hits the road for Alaska in March.

The Eagle Nest Project is a multi-faceted learning experience that teaches kids to identify and collect invasive plant matter and deadfall that they'll use to create a life-sized eagle nest.

In the past, Jim has done Eagle Nests at Rock City, Lake Guntersville State Park and Calvin Donaldson Elementary School. Upon completion, John and Dale Stokes from Save Our American Raptors (S.O.A. R.) will visit with a live bald eagle and more raptor education. They have augmented Jim's nest projects in the past and we're looking forward to meeting some big birds!

Eagle pairs return to their nests year after year, adding material and raising eaglets. We'd like the nest to be a learning tool that our students return to cyclically, as well. The piece is intended to be a permanent fixture of the Wauhatchie campus that students can add to and learn from for years to come.

Who Are We?

Wauhatchie Arts is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on combining education and arts programming with nature. Located on a 55-acre campus in Lookout Valley, Tennessee (below Raccoon Mountain), this is a beautifully-situated and ecologically-diverse spot that provides habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

Why Do We Need Funding?

The nest will be situated on a custom platform, which Jim will build. This project requires a big commitment, repeated campus visits, custom carpentry, and some community workshop days. We want to compensate Jim for his time, art and expertise.  We also want to compensate the folks with S.O.A.R. so they can keep their birds and keep doing their work.

We'd like to invite donors and their families to participate in the nest building project and to visit with the birds when S.O.A.R. visits.
