Honour those lost to DV

Our names are Jas and Bonnie, and we have a dream that we'd like to see come to reality. 

As we all know, Domestic Violence is an epidemic issue sweeping across our nation; one which, on average, took the lives of 1-2 Australian women every week in 2015. Take a moment to think about that...imagine a friend, mother, daughter, or relative disappearing every single week. According to REAL For Women,  71 females lost their lives to male violence in 2015. The majority were murdered by a current or former partner. 

Myself and Bonnie have felt the heartbreak and heaviness each time another woman's life has been taken, and like many, we have felt saddenned to see their names become just another in a long list of statistics. 

That said, we also recognise that men can be victims of domestic abuse, and we want to create a memorial that will forever honour the memory of all taken by domestic violence; giving the community a positive place to do so. We have been in discussions with Brisbane Council regarding the installation of a memorial and tree planting here in Brisbane, and have the support of Lord Mayor Graham Quirk - the next step is to secure funding so we can go ahead and then secure a park area. We have organised quotes for the supply of a plaque, and will soon be looking to finalise a location for the memorial, which is expected to go ahead in March 2016.

Here's where you come in. We need to raise the money needed for the cost of a memorial plaque, its installation, and also the cost of a small tree for the memorial planting. We know money is tight for many of us but we believe strongly in this cause, and creating a space in Brisbane where people can pay their respects to those lost to domestic violence.

Please note, any extra funds will be donated directly to Women's Legal Service QLD, an organisation who provide free legal services to women fleeing from Domestic violence.
