Help Darlene Beat Down Cancer

This Go Fund Me is for my mom, Darlene Byrd. Darlene was diagnosed with stage 4a HPV-linked oropharyngeal (throat) cancer at the beginning of August. While her diagnosis is certainly serious, she has a very good prognosis with an 80-90% cure rate. She began treatment this past week and will be undergoing a rigorous regime of radiation and chemotherapy five days a week for the next eight weeks. During this time Darlene will be unable to work due to the debilitating side effects of her treatment, and will be in need of a lot of love and care.
If you don’t know Darlene personally, here’s a bit about her: Darlene is 57 years old and lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. She’s an artist, and creates powerful pieces in a variety of medias. She works at JABA, a conjoined adult and child day care where she runs an intergenerational art and gardening program. Darlene has been the single mother of five children, all of whom have and continue to struggle with physical and mental illness to varying degrees. I cannot emphasize how strong, compassionate, and beautiful of a woman she is enough. Darlene is a survivor, a warrior, and an empath.
For my part I’ve chosen to take this semester off of school in order to make frequent visits home to help in providing her with physical and emotional support. Towards the end of September I’m anticipating taking a month or more away from work and staying with my Mom full-time in Virginia.
The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help cover Darlene’s medical bills, her rent, and living costs while she is out of work, and additionally to bolster her caregivers as they take time away from their lives to support her.
