Therapy Animal Needs Help

Donation protected
This means more to me than just a bit of cash to help my little one; this means saving her before the cancer takes her from me..

In early 2012, after a year long fight with the local mental health care system, I was able to finally get in to see a psychiatrist to assist me with a variety of issues which had plagued me my entire life. Once there, she only confirmed what I already knew: I had Bipolar II Disorder. What she also diagnosed on top of this, and severe depression, was Dysthymia. The solution was therapy, medication, and three loving domesticated rats: Maxine, Freyja, and Luna.

Why rats?

I've always loved rodents, rats in particular. They're grossly misunderstood in our world, something I can relate to. They're highly intelligent, possess metacognition, playful, curious, and familial.

Fancy rats (domesticated rats) are as different from their wild cousins as dogs are to wolves, but retain the same level of intelligence, metacognition, curiousity, playfulness, and familial bonds. Personally, my ratties have shown nothing but love towards me!

My original three ratties came to me rescues (well, two of them): Maxine and Freyja. Both I rescued from an abusive pet shop (out of business thanks to local efforts to shut them down). Luna came   along shortly after the rescues. All three were with me during the fight with the healthcare system, during my studies in university, got me out of hundreds of suicidal wishes, plans, and attempts, and helped me recover from a sexual assault.

Maxine sadly passed January 31st, 2013. This year, Freyja passed away (March) and Luna passed away (May). One of my dearest human friends, Andy, also passed during a vicious epileptic seizure (April).

All I have left to keep me grounded to reality are my remaining ratties, Opal and Rose, sisters I received from a local breeder. They've saved my life more times than I can count already this year. Their significance in my life is immense, and without them, there's nothing to keep me 'okay'. They are children to me. I mommy them, I tend to their every need, we share almost everything...

Opal has a breast tumor, which means she's going to need surgery. $200, half my rent for the month. Not sure how I'm gonna pull this off, but I'll do just about anything to help my babies..
