First, the great news. After months of researching and waiting we can finally say Natey has been approved for a life changing surgery in the USA with world leading neurosurgeon, Dr. TS Park. The surgery, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (http://www.stlouischildrens.org/our-services/center-cerebral-palsy-spasticity/about-selective-dorsal-rhizotomy-sdr), will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri, at the St. Louis Children's Hospital Cerebral Palsy Centre. This surgery will permanently reduce the spasticity in Nathans legs and will prevent further deformities to his bones. Dr. Park believes Nathan will walk INDEPENDENTLY in ALL environments and all future deterioration of his body will be prevented. We are currently on the list for June 2016.
Now for the not so great news. After recently (fall of 2014) covering the cost of surgery for a couple of Ontario patients, OHIP and more so, the few pediatric Neurosurgeons in Ontario, have refused to sign the forms required to get funding for out-of-country services for families currently seeking their assistance. Two other families have raised the funds required and paid out of pocket to see Dr. Park. Not fair, but this is what we are faced with.
The cost of the surgery itself and doctors/hospital fees will be around $71,000 Canadian depending on the exchange rate. That will cover everything Nathan will need medically in St. Louis. We are also hoping to raise enough funds to help pay for private specialized physical therapy, involving strength training, for one year and costs related to a one month stay in St. Louis.
Nathan is 10. We are entering the age of frequent growth spurts and therefore running out of time to prevent further damage to his body due to his spasticity. Nathan needs your help! This amazing boy deserves every opportunity available to him. As his mom, I can't let the burden of cost stand in his way of getting this surgery. Please help in anyway you can. We appreciate everyone who has helped Nathan along the way and continues to love and encourage our amazing boy!
