To whom it may concern,
My name is Caitlin and I am an 18 year old recent high school graduate. I have learned a lot in my 18 years here but the most important thing has probably been that I am whatever I choose to make myself and that, while the choices I make may define me, they do not limit me. I was born and raised in Memphis, TN in a single parent household with an older sister an a handicap brother. As far back as I can remember I have always taken care of my myself.By the time I turned 16 I was pretty much on my own, buying my own groceries, paying my school fees, buying my clothes, even paying my own doctor bills; only receiving help when things got to be too much. to this day I work two jobs and hold an internship with Facing History and Ourselves. This "you do what you have to" way of life has forced me to become strong, independent, and--most importantly--to throw myself into school. I took almost every AP class offered at my school and worked my way up to president or vice president of every club I was in, including, speech and debate, beta club, and model U.N. All I wanted was to work hard and find a way out of Memphis and out of a life where doing your best meant barely scraping by. When I found The University of California Irvine it was as if my prayers had been answered. I had found a school where I felt like I belonged. It was a school that held a strong foundation within my major and would allow me to dive more in depth through a concentration. I will be studying pre-law with a focus in international conflict resolution. I hope to one day go into third world countries who are experiencing genocide and help them to find peace, as well as bring the persecutors to justice. I dream of one day becoming a lawyer for the United Nations or even the International Criminal Court of Justice, and I strongly believe that it is the classes, professors, and opportunities I will gain through my time as a student at UCI that will get me there.
There is only one thing that stands in my way......money. UCI has been wonderful, and extremely generous with their financial aid but it just simply is not enough. I am still left with $26,000 to cover this year. I tried to go for loans but because I come from such a low income household my parents can not get approved as cosigners and I am left to pay for school alone. Please help me make my dreams come true. No one should ever have to turn down an incredible education due to financial circumstances. every little bit will help even if it is just a dollar. please, help me to rewrite the story of my life.
Thank you for all of your generosity,
Caitlin R.
