During the 2015-2016 school year, our high school band director, Jacob Crossley, had a vision. He wanted to start a competitive marching band in our small, rural county in southeastern Indiana. Knowing that our tiny school could not support such a program, he reached out to the band directors of the two other small schools in our county to form one county marching band. During the summer of 2016, approxiately 39 students and 3 band directors came together to form the Decatur County Marching Band. Hundreds of hours were spent on scorching blacktop throughout the summer to learn and perfect their craft. The culmination of their dedication was a performance at the Indiana State Fair Band Day competition. No other 1st year band has ever placed in the Top 15. Decatur County Marching Band made history by placing 13th!
The marching band is ready for year two. They have been anxiously awaiting the call-out meetings to start their season. The students benefitting from this campaign are the 2017 Decatur County Marching Band. The amount of funds needed to support competitive marching bands is tremendous. Our entire budget is approximately $16,000. The funds we are requesting would help us pay for a variety of things, including, but not limited to: entry fees to contests, travel expenses, needed additions to uniforms, needed instrument items like reeds, sticks, mallets, and repairs, and the cost for professional music instructors.
Our marching band season will begin in early May, but the majority of practice and competitions will last all summer. Funding is critical for our small band. Any and all funds obtained would be greatly appreciated and much needed for us to be competitive in a marching band world of schools with unlimited funds. This group of band students is highly dedicated, extremely motivated, and band directors that want only the best for their kids. Funds to support our group would be a summer free of financial stress to dedicate themselves to their music and performance. Thank you sincerely for your consideration.
