Code for America Summit

I'm the brigade leader for Code for Birmingham. (http://www.codeforbirmingham.org/)
We're one brigade of 72 in the US, all part of the national organization, Code for America. CfA is a non-profit aimed at creating 21st century solutions for the 21st century problems faced by governments and communities alike.

I saw the opportunity to start a brigade in Birmingham last March. My enthusiasm for civic engagement was matched by the enthusiasm of others here in Birmingham that saw the potential of having a brigade in the Magic City. We made our public debut during the National Day of Civic Hacking, a weekend devoted to our brand of civic engagement, from May 31st to June 1st.

Since then, we've become an officially recognized chapter, and the wheels have been rolling. We established a meeting place at Innovation Depot, and Code for Birmingham quickly grew from an under-the-table idea, to a full-fledged organization, neck deep in projects and ideas to move Birmingham forward. We do a range of things, and only part of it involves coding. Aside from developing community and government apps, we invest ourselves into advocating for tech friendly policies such as open data reform, and taking on design projects such as creating more eye-friendly bus routes in Birmingham, which promotes public transit use, and the economy of Birmingham at large. We've even been mentioned in AL.com!

I've been invited to attend the Code for America Summit in San Francisco from September 23-25, and I'm seeking funding to make it happen. (http://www.codeforamerica.org/summit/) The summit will be a great opportunity to link our brigade with other brigades in the country. It gives us access to a network of activists, coders, designers, start-ups, and established tech companies. In a nutshell, a mound of resources and inspiration will result from this summit if I can make it out to the summit! I'm asking for your help to make this happen, for which I will pledge myself to return your investment by making Birmingham more magic.
