Courtney MONTGOMERY

Courtney started skating two years ago, when she joined the inclusive skating club, ISkate, an associate member of Special Olympics GB. Since then, Courtney has won two gold medals at the Inclusive Skating competition in Glasgow in 2015 and a gold medal at the Special Olympics National Competition in Glasgow in 2016.

Before becoming a Special Olympics GB athlete, Courtney found it difficult to make and keep friends, leading her to feel isolated. The friends is she meeting through skating, training and competition, are able to understand her difficulties in socialising and are staying friends with her.

To Courtney’s great excitement, she has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Figure Skating competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, one of the biggest events in the Special Olympic global calendar which will attract over 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from over 110 countries.

Courtney knows she will learn a lot from this competition both on and off the ice. It’s an international event which will open possibilities of friends from farther afield than before. Courtney is looking forward to meeting other competitors and making new friends. Others include doing her best, winning medals for GBTeam and being an ambassador for her sport and her country.

For the athletes, going to the Games is not only about participating in their chosen sport: it’s about having fun, daring, improving their health and challenging preconceptions about people who have an intellectual disability.

Please give what you can to help Courtney on her way to Austria as she is working hard in order to be the best she can in 2017 and to do her country proud.
