Our truck on the morning of Wednesday, March 25th, while Willow was in the hospital being treated for heart aryhthmia, the transmission on our 2007 Mercury Mountaineer decided that 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears were completely passe and Reverse was something that no one needed. The factory transmission used in this model and in Ford Explorers seem to have a life span of 120,000 miles; we got 134,000 miles out of.
With the combination of several emergency room visits for Willow and even an extended stay in the hospital bills are stacking up and money is going in several different directions, we're very cashed strapped and the having the truck is absolutely critical for us to survive.
Why not just sell the vehicle?
It's simple, we still owe $7000 on the vehicle and selling an 8 year old truck with a dead transmission is not going to sell for that much. Over all, the truck is in pretty decent shape.
Okay, so why not just buy a new transmission? You'd save money that way.
We thought about that, shaving $1000 off the cost is inviting. Where we decided against it was in the warranty. The best new transmission warranty we found was 50,000 mile. The rebuilt transmission comes with a 100,000 mile warranty. We drive a lot. Between work, performances, shows, violin lessons, touring, and conventions, we put nearly 40,000 miles on the truck in the 3 years since we bought it.
Didn't you say that you were getting $2400 back in a tax refund?
Turns out our tax refund was garnished, so that's out.
Didn't you say that the transmission rebuild was only going to cost $3900, why are you asking for $4840?
The estimate of $3900 provided by Kirkland Transmission did not include tax or fluid. This is on me for not being more diligent when getting that estimate. So I'm a little bummed about it.
