Christmas wish for Comuna 13-2018

We're back with another Christmas Wish for Comuna 13. The soccer school & foundation, Sembrando paz y esperanza en las comunas, continues to seed hope and peace in Comuna 13, and we want to come along side them again and help them to raise money to continue to improve their field. This is going to require a lot of time and money which is why we're starting our Christmas wish in September!

Through the help of many in 2016 we were able to raise $3,000 to build a fence to keep the boys safe and prevent the soccer balls from flying off the side of the mountain. In 2017 the community came together to build the fence, and it has made a world of difference, however there is still much work to be done to help get their field to safety and regulation standards where they can invite other teams to come and play and have a field they can truly take pride in.

We have seen that together with the generosity of the global community, and the hard working locals of Comuna 13 we can come together and create space not only to play fútbol, but a place to experience the joy of being part of a team....a family, a place to find peace, and a place to dream and have hope.

Growing up in the US playing soccer, I had manicured fields to play and practice on where I felt safe, dreamed of being able to play just like Mia Hamm, and met some of the my best friends! I want to help these young kids whom I fell in love with in Medellin have the same opportunity...(though they are probably dreaming of playing just like James Rodriguez from the Colombian National team and not Mia Hamm ;)).

Yenny and Andres started the soccer school back in 2007 by cleaning up what at the time was basically a garbage dump and making space for the kids to play! They created the school to  help the kids focus on a sport taking them away from social problems like gangs, and drugs. However, more than that, over the last 11 years working only as volunteers (a true labor of love) Yenny and Andres have created what for many of the boys is "home". The soccer school is what we see on the surface....but once you have spent any time with them, what you realize is, they have truly created so much more!

This fall  I am joining with  my friend Anderson Mejia from Nueva Lengua to raise money to help make much needed improvements to the field like leveling the ground, expanding the area, filling it with sand and more. We estimate this project to cost approximately $5,000 USD, we will have a more exact estimate soon after we have have an itemized list of what is needed including labor. Our goals is to have raised the money by Christmas of this year, so they can begin the renovation process in 2019.

The soccer field is a humble place for these young kids to play and dream! And with the help of all of you we can make this place a lot safer and more useful for the kids who play there, and soon they will be able to host other teams and expand the hope and peace they have already seeded.

Donations of any size, however small or large are welcomed!

Muchas Gracias!
