Chime Tower at St. Luke's
Donation protected
St. Luke's of the Mountains Episcopal Church lies in the beautiful lush green hillside of La Crescenta. This church is especially blessed to have received a very special donation from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Watchorn in memory of their son Emory, a World War I victim. The gift of the Deagan chimes in 1926 serves as a symbol of beauty throughout all the Crescenta Valley both visually and aurally. The sound emitted from the chime tower is unique in its richness and fullness. The chimes were designed to play several different tones and melodies, as well as chiming the top of the hour when they are working. These have been heard throughout the Valley for 90 years. Sadly, the chimes have been silenced.
St. Luke’s considers itself a community church, and this is one of the ways that it serves its neighbors. Many civic and social groups use St. Luke’s campus, and there are community activities for students who attend the nearby Rosemont Middle School and Crescenta Valley High School. It has become a safe place for young people of all faiths to gather. The chimes are meant for all to enjoy.
The chimes are an integral part of the community. Once popular, Deagan chimes have become rare and even more rare are chimes that are still functioning. As a result, there are a limited number of technicians who are able to attend to repairs and maintenance, which are rather costly. In fact, the one technician who specializes in Deagan chimes lives in Tennessee. In order to keep this beautiful and historic equipment working smoothly, we are collecting donations for upkeep of the chimes. We would love to get the chimes up and running again so that everyone in the community may enjoy their songs.
