Chance for Chase

Chase was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 in April 2013. NF2 is a rare genetic mutation that affects 1 in 30,000 and causes tumors to grow on the fibers of the nerves. These tumors can grow throughout the body or centralized in certain areas, like the brain, eyes, ears or spinal cord. Tumors in these areas can cause blindness, deafness, paralysis or death.

Currently, there is no cure available for NF2 and it carries an average life expectancy of 36 years of age, Chase is currently 8 . Typically, the earlier someone is diagnosed with NF2, the shorter their expectancy but each case is different. Chase could live another 100 years or another week. 

Chase has had 6 major surgeries since his diagnosis, including 4 spinal laminectomies. He also has meningiomas on his brain, bi-lateral acoustic schwannomas in his ears, cataracts in both eyes and total paralysis in his left arm. 

Most recently, Chase's tumor biopsy has shown the benign tumors have now become Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors. There is another tumor that just presented itself on the 10/2/15 MRI that is also believed to be an MPNST.

We travel extensively to Cincinnati Childrens hospital, which is a 3 1/2 hour drive, one-way, for all of Chase's care but due to the extreme rarity of these tumors now becoming malignant,  the doctors have referred us to Birmingham Alabama, the UAB Medical facility, where they have an amazing NF research facility for a second opinion.

All of the doctors fees and flights associated with this trip will be funded out of pocket as the insurance will not cover it.

As you can imagine, these trips can get very costly.
