Who Are We?
Candies4Kids is a nonprofit organization that gives candy to children in 3rd world countries. These kids have had to grow up quickly, having to work starting at a young age while watching their family suffer from poverty. Starvation and not having water or other necessities are not the only problem they are facing. They lack happy childhood memories such as playing with their toys and siblings. Instead they are working, so that their family does not starve. They have to take on such a big responsibility of taking care of their family at such a young age. Childhood experiences have a strong impact on what kind of person they grow up to be. We are not only providing candy to these kids, but happiness, a childhood memory and a seed of good that they will likely pass on to someone else in need.
As of right now, Candies4Kids is a start up nonprofit organization. We are working on getting legal paperwork and sponsors.
This is how it works:
1. People will drop off candy in boxes at their local collection center.
2. All boxes will be shipped to Houston (headquarters).
3. We will have volunteers perform QC (quality check to make sure candy has not been tampered with).
4. We will work with a local charity (in a 3rd world country) in order to distribute the candy.
The collection will occur around Halloween. Eventually we hope to expand to a few more major holidays such as Christmas or Valentines Day.
Who Is the CEO?
My name is Arooj Sheikh. I am 15 years old, and I live in Houston, TX. I have a black belt in Taekwondo and I speak 6 languages (conversational).
How Was the Idea Born?
Once upon a time in 4th grade, I went trick or treating with my little sister. So I carried my not so little Halloween basket and went as a witch. My sister went as the devil (no surprise there). When we finally got back, I was so excited. I had so much candy, and candy was my life back then (still is). I started digging through all my candy when my dad said, “Ok, now through it all away”. Like any other 4th grader on the verge of losing their candy, I did this: “daddy don’t throw it away!” (sticks tongue out). But he wouldn’t listen. So I asked if I could donate it to kids who never got any. My dad googled it, but nothing came up. Thats how the idea of Candies4Kids was born.
