A car for my Grandfather, who is a disabled Veteran

Donation protected
Dear ALL:

I am writing on behalf of my grandfather, Armando Fontaine, a 71 year old Army Veteran. He has diabetes, which has caused him to lose both his legs and to obtain a tracheotomy, limiting his speech. He also has extensive heart problems and glaucoma. Despite these health issues, he manages to put up a smile at all times. By far, Armando Fontaine is the strongest man I will ever know.

He lives close to the Miami-based V.A. Hospital and attends doctor appointments numerous times per week. His means for transportation is my grandmother, Martha Fontaine. She learned to drive in her late 60s "“ when my grandfather became ill "“ in order to keep both their independence. She drives him everywhere! They also used the car for leisure purposes; they turned grocery shopping into a "dressing up" fun experience. In spite of all the health problems that my grandfather has to deal with on a daily basis, his car served as his independence. It made him happy.

You noticed that I stated "used" when referring to my grandfather's car. This is because on the morning of January 3rd 2012, my grandparents noticed that their vehicle was missing from their driveway. They've had this vehicle for over 10 years and not once did it give them any real problems. It was also equipped with a wheelchair mount that allowed my grandparents to easily pack the wheelchair onto the car. In the vehicle was the legs to my grandfather's wheelchair, which gave him a spot to place his prosthetic legs. The car has a handicap tag on the front mirror and a baby seat in the back, which is where their youngest granddaughter would sit.

It is inconceivable to me that someone is capable of stealing a car that is obviously equipped for a handicapped person - I can't even begin to understand the amount of evil that it takes for someone to actually do this. Moreover, by looking at the 1996 silver Nissan Sentra, one can immediately tell that my grandparents are not "well-off." In other words, this person stole from handicapped, poor people. My grandparents couldn't even afford full coverage insurance; thus, they will not get any money for the stolen vehicle.

My family is not economically stable enough to fix this issue in a timely manner, which is why I am asking for help from outside sources. My grandparents are amazing people that have kept a smile on their faces despite years of bad luck. They laugh every day, and after decades of marriage, they still hold hands and kiss. It's a beautiful thing. I want them to continue believing in life and in love "“ I don't want this to affect the happiness that they've worked so hard to keep.

Please help them.

Sincerely,

Jess N.
