My name is Danielle and I'm a senior in high school with a dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. I discovered my passion for neuroscience after sustaining a skull fracture in September 2013 when I was hit by a car. As soon as I could read I was researching the brain so that I would understand what my doctors were talking about and it was love at first paragraph.
I've been selected to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC in mid November where I would also receive the Future Phyicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence. Unfortunately tuition for this congress is very expensive, and I'm at serious risk of not being able to make payments and attend.
Financial struggles have been a heavy part of my past as I have lived with multiple families due to loved one's struggling with addiction and an absent father. I currently live with my best friend's family and I am perpetually grateful to have them, but this is an expense which they can not assist me with. The head of the household has been on long term disability due to poor health and numerous complications with pancreatitis, yet this amazing woman still strives to support me as well as her two children.
This congress is a chance for me to realize my dream of a future in medicine. Among the Nobel prize winning lecturers and displays of current medical technology lies the chance for medical school scholarships and gives me the competitive edge for my resume regarding undergraduate scholarships, and without scholarships I will not be able to attend college, a possibility that haunts me everyday because I know that education and persuing my dream is the only way out of the poverty line world I have grown up in. A future in medicine is my way to be more than a mouth to feed, my way to love what I do every day, and my way to give back to a world that has presented me with so much.
