What is the issue?
Research in school-age children has shown that students with 3 or more risk factors for heart disease (obesity, elevated blood sugar, lipid abnormalities) are 13 times more likely to have a heart attack by the age of 48 than are their healthier counterparts. With rates of diabetes and heart disease increasing, it is essential to focus efforts for risk reduction amongst our youth.
What are we doing to make our children healthier?
The Peel Region District School Board has opened its doors for SANSAR to bring the important message of heart disease, diabetes prevention and overall healthy living to their middle school students this fall of 2014. SANSAR aims to educate the students on these life threatening diseases, and help them identify what they can do to reduce the risks for themselves and their families.
We believe that children are often underestimated in their ability to communicate effective messages. The KIDS at heART campaign will invite all students (in the participating grades 6-8) following the education assembly to utilize their creative skills and participate in a comic calendar competition. They will be invited to create an online comic strip with a healthy heart message, presenting some aspect of eating well or engaging in physical activity in a humorous way. Twelve winners selected from the various participating schools will have their heart healthy living cartoon messages included in our 2015 calendar. These calendars will then be provided back to all the students in the participating grades to be taken home and displayed in their homes throughout the 2015 year, as a reminder to live healthy every day for the entire family.
Who are we?
SANSAR is a registered Canadian charity based in the Peel region of Ontario, whose mission is to promote awareness, education and research into cardiovascular disease with a focus on the population in the highest risk group, South Asians. Peel region is home to over 300,000 South Asians. By offering an education and awareness campaign in Peel, we are able to reach a large group of youth of all backgrounds, including those at increased risk.
