Outfitted Vehicle for Kevin's Powerchair

Donation protected
The Butler family is starting a fundraiser to purchase a wheelchair outfitted vehicle complete with hand controls for our son. Kevin was born a normal child but was later diagnosed at the age of four with muscular dystrophy after doctors at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego identified the oncoming symptoms. This disorder has led to a gradual decrease in his mobility and strength over the years. Kevin recently participated in a study through the National Institute of Health in an attempt to identify the exact form of Muscular Dystrophy (there are many different forms). The results of this study pointed toward Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy due to a genetic irregularity in the dystrophin gene. Some of his doctors have also suggested Limb-Girdle’s Muscular Dystrophy as another possibility. The Muscular Dystrophy Association continues to research possible new treatments, but lacks the extra funding necessary to assist families with medical expenses like wheelchair outfitted vehicles and other expensive pieces of equipment.

Kevin completed his general education Cal State requirements at a local community college this year and will be transferring to California Polytechnic University Pomona in the fall. His goal is to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering to become financially independent and make a difference in the lives of others. He hopes to design adaptive equipment and research exciting new developments in robotics to assist disabled persons in improving their mobility and quality of life. Thankfully, Kevin obtained a power wheelchair which will allow him to effectively navigate the large campus. He is in need of a wheelchair outfitted vehicle so he can transport the 400lb wheelchair with him wherever he goes. Doing so will greatly improve his independence and ability to be involved in the community, both on campus and elsewhere. These vehicles are extremely expensive due to the extensive modifications that must be made to transport the wheelchair without compromising the structural integrity and safety of the vehicle. By assisting Kevin in obtaining this vehicle with your donation, you will enable him to further achieve his career goals and improve life for others dealing with various forms of diseases. Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated. Please stay tuned for periodic updates.

Thank you,
Ken and Peggy Butler
