The Need:

Due to the total defunding of art and music programs in Detroit Public Schools, there exists a dearth of proper art or music education for Brightmoor’s children. This insufficiency is compounded by the shortage of summer programs for the 7000+ children in the neighborhood, and an absence of any focus on the arts. Finally, many Brightmoor families lack the resources and funds needed to afford independent music lessons or art classes, which are proven to help to foster a child’s development.

Who are we and what do we do?

Seven Mile Music is a project initiated and run entirely by University of Michigan music students. We, recognizing the need for music and mentoring for children living in Detroit neighborhoods that lack school arts programs, have been working with various community centers and public schools in Detroit to provide weekly music lessons since 2012.  Our mission is to:

“Provide youth in Detroit lasting opportunities to learn and enjoy music and the arts. ”

Last Summer, Seven Mile Music held the first annual Summer in the City Arts Camp . The Summer in the City Arts Camp is the only free, five-day a week music and arts summer camp for children of elementary and middle school age from the Brightmoor neighborhood in Detroit.  When we established the camp in the summer of 2015, we hoped to build a foundation for future summer camps and, more importantly, support for music and artistic education to continue in future summers eventually extending throughout the rest of the year. We observed that in nurturing the arts for the 70+ participating neighborhood children, music and the arts began to make a tremendous difference in their academic and social trajectories.

For the 2016 version of the Summer in the City Arts Camp we aim:

1) to build upon the successes of last year’s camp by further fostering the passions of 2015 campers

2) to introduce more children to, and instill in them with a love for, music and playing an instrument

3) to nurture the children's development into skilled musicians, potentially opening up career and scholastic opportunities.
