Joel & Hope Tucker and some of their friends are doing a sponsored swim to raise money for Andy Blagden. They will do their swimathon on Mon 21st Dec at GL1 in Gloucester.
About Andy
Andy Blagden, Blaggers, Blaggy or Blags, is a forty-something husband to Charlotte and father to three children from Gloucester, and he is our friend. In 2013 Andy underwent an operation to remove a tumor from his spine. As we understand it, the lengthy operation was a success however a few days later he was battling Sepsis. Although Andy survived, he was left a tetraplegic.
After the operation, Andy spent over two years in various hospitals. He is now in a support bungalow back in Gloucester but living separate from his family due their home being inadequate for Andy's needs. Disability is expensive: financially, emotionally and socially. The family desperately need to be back together in their family home. In addition, they need a wheelchair accessible vehicle and various other pieces of equipment. Andy's story can be read at Blagger's Blog. The wider campaign to raise money for Blaggers can be found at GoFundMe and you can donate there or here. It all goes to the same cause. The aim is to raise all the money the Blagdens need at this time, which is £85,000, before Easter 2016. This swim is one of many fund raising efforts to contribute to this total.
About Joel and Hope
Joel and Hope Tucker are brother and sister. Both were born with a neuromuscular condition known as RYR1 related congential myopathy. This condition affects their general muscle strength and both are wheelchair users. Joel is fully wheelchair dependent. Hope has limited mobility. They both swim regularly as a means to build their muscle strength but it is still as effort for them. Despite this, they want their swimming efforts to raise money for Andy.
