How Do Black Men Who Were Raised in Single Mother Homes Build Romantic Relationship with Black Women?
Brief Research Description:
Hello! My name is Maia Niguel Moore. First, I would like to thank you for visiting my page.
As many of you know, I am currently earning my Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Southern Illinois University and I am in the process of planning my research study for my dissertation. I am specifically interested in promoting mental and emotional wellness and counseling services among marginalized and underrepresented groups as a means to help improve academic achievement, college preparedness, and overall psychosocial development for members of the Black community.
With the recent events that have taken place around race and systematic racism and oppression towards the Black community, it has become painfully clear that attention must be paid to the overall state of the Black community and how to meet the specific needs of the Black men and women in terms of healthy development and achievement.
As a therapist, I feel it is my responsibility to facilitate as an agent for social justice by advocating for those who are unable to advocate for themselves. Also, as a Black woman, I am extremely passionate and invested in the overall mental and emotional health of the Black community. Furthermore, I am specifically interested in the romantic relationship dynamic between Black men and women. I believe this research is needed not only in academia, but also for the fields of counseling and psychology to help promote health, wellness, and progression in the Black community as a whole.
How will Your Contribution be used?
All contributions will be used to accomplish the following four primary expenses:
1. Materials to recruit participants (paper for flyers, ink, travel, etc.)
2. Incentives provided to participants. Participants will be given $40 gift cards for their participation in the study. I will recruit 7-10 participants for this study.
3. Once interviews begin, I will have to travel to the site of the study (St. Louis, MO), which is approximately 105 miles from my home. I will be travelling to the St. Louis area at least 2-3 times a week to recruit, conduct interviews, and facilitate focus groups. The length of the study will be approximately four months (including recruiting participants).
4. Two audio tape recorders (a primary recorder and a back up recorder) will have to be purchased to record interviews and focus group discussions. The primary recorder is priced at $35.22 and the secondary recorder is priced at $17.89.
5. At the conclusion of the study, transcription and coding services will be used to transcribe the interviews so that I may code and accurately report my findings. Transcription services start at $2.00/min. Each of the 7-10 participants will be interviewed three times. Each interview will last between 45-60 minutes. In addition, four focus group sessions will be held that will last 60 minutes. The total number of time for both individual interviews and focus group sessions will add up to 1,185 minutes if only seven participants are recruited, and each interview takes 45 minutes. Consequently, the cost for transcription is over $2,000.
Peace and blessings,
Maia
