International TEFL Academy (ITAN) teachers in Nicaragua are working with Proyecto Barrilete to teach their students English. We have identified multiple needs of the program and would love to be able to help these children to grow and continue their success
Proyecto Barrilete is a preschool and after school program for underprivileged youth located in Guadalupe, Leon, Nicaraugua. Children participating in the program come from various backgrounds including households who simply need after school support to those who come from less fortunate situations where families are battling drug and alcohol addictions, parents needing to go to other cities to find work or other scenarios which have left the children in the care of Barriletes or other family members. Many of these children have been left with grandparents or other relatives who often have difficulty taking care of their daily needs and face challenges helping them with school assignments. The children come to Barriletes to play, learn, and eat lunch (for many of the children this is the only meal they receive in the day). It provides the children a bit of stability in their everyday reality. On average Barriletes house up to 13 children whose families have abandoned them or have left the country for work.
With the money donated, 50% will go towards a deep cleaning and reorganization of the building which will improve health, living, and education standards for the children. 20% will pay for school supplies and books. Another 20% will go towards hygiene supplies and new bedding for the children living in the school. 10% will go towards supplies volunteers use in order to tutor the students in English and other subjects.
