Hello everyone, I wanted to let...

Hello everyone, I wanted to let you all know that we went to the doctor yesterday and Baylee was able to maintain her weight over the last week so the doctor left her tube out. We have another appointment in 2 weeks to check again on her weight. If she continues to maintain her goal then she will be without the feeding tube permanently. So now we are able to focus on her arm that is still paralyzed...we were accepted by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and we are going to The Brown Neuro Clinic for them to meet Baylee and see how they can help her to regain function or as much function of her arm as possible, that appointment is April 5th. Then we will see Ortho at Childrens again and schedule her next surgery, which is a Nerve Conduction Study, to see if she has regained ANY nerve funtion from her spine to that arm. She will be returning to school on March 19th to resume her normal education and we are extremely excited about that, she will have a helper to get her through her days. Please stay tuned and I will continue to update as I get new information. God bless you all and thank you for helping our family through all of this, we are truly grateful!!! Excellant news today..We went for our...

Excellant news today..We went for our check up at the GI doctor and he decided to give Baylee a chance and took her feeding tube out temporarily. If she can continue to at least maintain her 88 pounds and not loose any she gets to leave it out. She was so excited that she cried after they removed it. Now her little face gets a break from all that tape. We are still working with Orthopeadics on her arm, it is still paralyzed but she is trying very hard to use the muscles and get it working. We will be going to the Neurology Center at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital on April 5th to see if there is more they can do to try to help us regain use of that arm. Although our journey is not over yet, I feel we have come a long way in such a short time. I want to thank everyone for the donations, with out them I would not have been able to stay at home with Baylee while she recovers. It means alot to our family for me to be by her side through it all. I also want to thank you for keeping up with our story and sending us all the encouraging messages. I will keep you posted after next weeks appointment and will hopefully be able to report that the tube is still out. God bless

We went to the Ortho doctor...

We went to the Ortho doctor today for our monthly check up, she said she is doing pretty good but that she still has alot of tightness in her hand and we are going to have to increase our exercises to help stretch it out. She ordered Baylee a special splint for her shoulder and hopefully we will get it on Wednesday. We will be planning another procedure in about 2 months to check the nerves in her arm again to see if there has been any improvement since the first study was performed. We are keeping our fingers crossed because we want to have her arm return to its normal function so she can go back to playing sports and being a kid.

We ask that you please continue to follow our progress and continue to share our page as it helps us in so many ways. Stay tuned for more updates, we should be finding out soon if the feeding tube will be coming out sooner than we thought!!! God bless you all and thank you for the support. Melinda

About This Page

My sister, Jessica, and I are setting up this donation to help support the family of Baylee Littlefield, currently hospitalized at Children's Medical Center in Dallas. Baylee's mom, Melinda, lives (literally) at the hospital with her right now and has been Jessica's best friend for the past 14 years. My daughter, Kari, and Baylee were born just 6 months apart and so they have been best friends/sisters since birth! Please help us help this family!

Baylee is 11 years old and has always been an incredibly active and energetic child. Unlike a lot of children of this generation, she would much rather go outside and ride her bike or run around outside with her friends instead of stay indoors and play on the computer. Baylee enjoys playing soccer and most recently, basketball. Just before her accident, she was training hard daily in preparation for basketball sign ups.

On November 19, 2011 while spending Thanskgiving with family, Baylee was involved in an accident on an ATV that almost took her life. She suffered a stage 1 kidney laceration, stage 2 liver laceration, broken shoulder, broken right hand, nail evulsion on the right hand, and a brachial plexus injury to the right arm which has subsequently left that arm now paralyzed.

Those were the original injuries.

Melinda noticed that Baylee seemed to be losing a lot of weight and not eating. Shortly afterwards, Baylee began to vomit every time she took in any food or liquid. The vomiting became to become to severe that it was then just bile and Baylee was barely able to walk because she'd become so weak. An already tall and slender little girl who was 85 pounds before the accident has now lost 20 pounds. Melinda took her back to Children's, where she has been since.

Baylee continues to lose weight and is extremely frail. The doctors gave her a feeding tube through her nose to try to get her food since she couldn't hold down food eaten normally. Unfortunately, she still continued to vomit. They had to stop the feeding tube to keep her from continually vomiting. When Kari and I went to visit her last Thursday, she weight a mere 67 pounds.

The hospital has done CT scans, an MRI of the brain, upper GI, endoscopy, and many, many more tests, all without finding a single answer to why she cannot eat. Because she continues to lose weight, which is essentially starving her, the doctors had no choice but to put her under on Thursday to insert a PICC line to give TPN (total parental nutrition) due to her stomach not handling food or the feeding tube formule. This PICC line goes in her arm and through to her heart, where a special formula with the nutrients, calories, etc are able to be fed to her through her heart and bypass her stomach completely so that she can stop losing weight (and hopefully gain!) while they continue to try to figure out what is wrong with her. The doctors have told Melinda that she is a medical mystery at this point, but will keep her there and continue testing until they find the source of the problem and can get her well.

Until then, Melinda is living at the hospital with Baylee to keep a 24/7 watch on her. Children's Medical Center is quite a drive from their home. Her husband drives to the hospital SEVERAL times a week to provide support, check-in, and brings things that they need, but you can imagine, this is costing a very large amount of money in gas and parking is not free either. Additionally, the cost for the parents to be able to eat is completely out of pocket and adds up quickly.

This family is our family. Please help us help this family through this hard time. The doctors are expecting Baylee to be there for several more weeks, at the least and I'm not sure how much longer they can pay for everything on one income.

Your donations go straight to Baylee and her family, so please, any small amount is sincerely appreciated and be sure to share this page with others as well.
