The CSC Rifle and Quill Foundation...
The CSC Rifle and Quill Foundation had an incredibly successful 1st quarter.
Our 501(c)3 tax-exempt application was received and is undergoing processing by the IRS. We should hear back from the IRS on approval by mid-July.
Thank you to all our generous “Battle Buddies” out there that help us raise more than $3800.
We are proud to have supported 11 Chadron State College students who accepted the challenge and successfully complete the 2013 Bataan Memorial Death March.
We have $1,000 fund for immediate emergency relief should any of the Veterans on campus find themselves in a financial crisis.
We raised more than 375 pounds of food for the less-fortunate.
And we are not done yet! We are already planning bigger and better projects to support the Veterans at Chadron State College. The establishment of a Veterans Information Center on campus and the replacement of the CSC cannon are our next major projects.
1st Quarter Summary:

Funds spent supporting CSCRQF missions $2387.52.

Chadron State College students who participated...
Chadron State College students who participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico have returned to Chadron, according to co-leader of the group, Sarah Polak.
She said over 5,000 people participated in this year’s event. "I am proud to say that all 13 people from CSC who started the event finished the event and there were no serious injuries. If you see the students who participated (you will know them by their limping from blisters), please congratulate them. It was both a physical and mental challenge for all who participated," said Polak.
15.1 Mile hike with less than 35 lb pack:
Jessica Koch, Nakaya Fester and Sarah Polak
26.2 Mike hike with at least 35 lb pack:
Evan Baker, Justin Dekok, Kassie VanDiest, Joseph “Mario” Brown, Casey Stiles, Austin Welke, William Jeffery, Daniel Hogsett, Amanda Gibbs and Franklin Annis.
Polak said, "We would also like to give special thanks to SFC Carl Dehling who went with us as team support. He made the trip much easier for us in so many ways. Thank you, CSC, for your support with our canned food drive and best wishes."
The public is invited to a series of related events March 26. The students enrolled in the Survey of American Military History course have worked in teams to create exhibits about the Battle for Bataan and the Bataan Death March.
These exhibits will be unveiled at an opening reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the lower level of Crites Hall. The students will be to talk about their exhibits and their experiences of participating in the Bataan Memorial Death March, held on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Refreshments will be provided.
Franklin Annis, instructor of the course said, “These exhibits display the incredible willpower of our American fighting men and women that were captured on Bataan. The exhibits are more than just a story about an isolated incident during WWII but an example of how team-work and leadership can be used by the U.S. Military to overcome incredible hardships.”
In addition to the exhibit opening, students will be hosting a showing of the movie “So Proudly We Hail” at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. This 1943 film is based on the true accounts of the nurses who served on Bataan. This is one of the few films, made during World War II, which highlights the role of women in war.
For more information about these events, please contact Annis at (402) 968-4506 or fannis@csc.edu.

The CSC Rifle and Quill Foundation is raising money to support 11 Chadron State College Students that will be participating in the 24th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March.
"The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging march through the high desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range, conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health and, in many cases, their very lives." - http://www.bataanmarch.com/
Currently we have 8 students interested in completing the 26.2 mile course in the heavy catagory (carrying 35 lb packs), 1 student is interested in completing the 26.2 mile course in the light catagory, and 2 students interested in completing the 14.2 mile course.
Please consider supporting these students in participating in this grueling military history experience.
"The Bataan Memorial Death March honors a special group of World War II heroes. These brave soldiers were responsible for the defense of the islands of Luzon, Corregidor and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines. The conditions they encountered and the aftermath of the battle were unique. They fought in a malaria-infested region, surviving on half or quarter rations with little or no medical help. They fought with outdated equipment and virtually no air power. On April 9, 1942, tens of thousands of American and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese forces. The Americans were Army, Army Air Corps, Navy and Marines. Among those seized were members of the 200th Coast Artillery, New Mexico National Guard. They were marched for days in the scorching heat through the Philippine jungles. Thousands died. Those who survived faced the hardships of a prisoner of war camp. Others were wounded or killed when unmarked enemy ships transporting prisoners of war to Japan were sunk by U.S. air and naval forces." - http://www.bataanmarch.com/r09/history.htm
