Pathway to Work

What is a life worth?
This is the question I asked myself as I looked out my office window at a man who lived in under an overhang of an unused office building across the street. I was curious about why he stays there and how he survives sleeping outside in the coldest months of winter.

What is a life worth?
This is the question I asked myself as I saw a battered man slouched on the corner holding a sign which read, "Homeless, please help."

What is a life worth?
This is the question I asked myself as I noticed a desperate-looking woman with a frozen stare, begging for money. "Do you have $1 for bus fare?"

What is a life worth?
My time, my money, my compassion and determination to help others in need.

What I Do
• Build trusting relationships so I can better assist with overcoming the barriers preventing each person to live a meaningful life. • Offer food/drink, toiletries, clothing, blankets, coats, shoes, boots (provided by donations) • Advocate for needs at local agencies, hospitals, doctors’ offices, supportive housing apartments, law enforcement agencies • Escort people to appointments at social service agencies, hospitals, doctors’ offices • Collaborate with agencies to best meet the needs of homeless people • Research best practices for innovative housing and work programs • Encourage people to make healthy choices and life changes. • Provide hope that people’s lives can improve if they are willing to make changes •  Connect people to AA folks and meetings • Provide a means to make money through a supportive work program.

Description of Supported Work Program

A supported work program that is tailored to the unique needs of homeless individuals will provide the opportunity to earn money and develop the skills needed to maintain employment. Each participant in the program will receive mentoring in the areas of money management, social/communication skills, and with developing short and long-term personal goals.
Work will be coordinated through the City of Syracuse Public Works Department, and tasks will consist of supplemental sanitation and landscaping in the downtown Syracuse area.

Goals of the Work Program

• To provide a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless individuals through a paid work/training experience.
• To decrease the need to solicit on the corners and change the perception of homeless individuals in the community.
• To address the barriers impacting the ability of homeless individuals to work, by providing on-the-job training, which will include areas of work safety, work ethic and also provide the participants with a potential work reference based on job performance.
• To address the barriers impacting the ability of homeless individuals to work, by providing support services such as life skills training (time and money management, communication skills).
• Create a cleaner, more pleasant downtown living and working environment.

How Can You Help? You can partner with me to help those in need!
You can help by donating funds to help defer the costs of filing fees associated with NYS and Federal regulations, supporting the continuation of my services to help defer operational costs of my outreach, and fund the pilot portion of the supported work program. All contributions are tax deductible.   What is a life worth?
