Starting Blocks for Swim Team

Donation protected
The Amundsen High School pool has no starting blocks for our competitive swim programs.

Starting blocks are an essential piece of equipment for any competitive swim program. They consist of low platforms raised above the edge of the pool at the starting end of each competition lane. At the beginning of a race, the swimmer in each lane steps onto the block, assumes a starting stance, and waits for the official to sound the horn.

Diving off of a starting block takes a considerable amount of skill and technique. Swimmers with fast and powerful starts have a significant competitive advantage over those who do not. Amundsen may be the only high school in Chicago that fields a competitive swim team without the benefit of having starting blocks to practice and compete with. Because of this, our team is at a real disadvantage.

Installing starting blocks for the Amundsen pool will enable our swim program to flourish. With blocks, our starts will improve and our confidence will grow. This will lead to faster races and greater opportunities for our student-athletes.

Fortunately, this spring our coach won a grant for $6,000 toward the purchase of starting blocks. We're now 75% toward our goal!

Please push us over the top by making a $25, $50, or $100+ contribution.

Thank you!
