Pat Rawls Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
The Pat Rawls Memorial Scholarship aims to recognize the contributions of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Queer (LGBT) high school students and their allies on behalf of the LGBT community. The scholarship fund is being established in memory of Patricia Rawls who served the LGBT community in a number of capacities over her lifetime.

Pat passed on February 2, 2013 following a valiant fight against brain cancer.

She was a soldier in the fight for women’s rights, a dedicated member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church and an animal lover.

A member of the Democratic Women’s committee, she continued active work in the recent campaign focusing on health care, as she was learning firsthand the limitations of our current system.

Surviving are her life partner, Carolyn Kerr; and sharing much of their time in Indiana, her granddaughter, Jessica Gremillion. *

Inspired by Pat’s work on behalf of women and the LGBTQ communities, the Indiana Cares Campaign established a scholarship fund in Rawls name in 2012. The Pat Rawls Memorial Scholarship aims to recognize individuals who have shown exemplary service on the part of the LGBTQ community, as well as academic excellence and community service.

“We feel this scholarship reinforces the ideals and actions that Pat embodied throughout her life,” said David Porter, chair of the scholarship committee.

The organization is currently working to establish a viable financial base for the fund, with a fundraising goal of $5,000.

Scholarship requirements and application procedures are forthcoming.
