Colorado's Retiring Racehorses In Need

Donation protected
Our Goal:
To take in a minimum of 3 horses from the track into our aftercare program in 2014.

About us:
CANTER Colorado, an affiliate of CANTER helps retiring racehorses find new starts after the finish line.

As an ALL volunteer organization, we are dedicated to helping horses find new homes through our website listing service and through our aftercare and placement program.

Our aftercare and placement program, gives trainers and owners who race at Arapahoe Park (Colorado’s only live racing venue), an opportunity to donate their retiring race horse to CANTER Colorado. Our program is designed to help offer trainers another opportunity for their horse.
As the caretaker of these horses, we ensure each horse is provided with proper time off from the track, rehabilitation services, and retraining skills. Finally, we place the horse in a new and loving (non-racing) home that is thoroughly vetted and approved by ways of our adoption process.

Each horse comes to us with their own personality, racing history, rehabilitation and retraining needs; all of which we deeply observe and learn about in order to fully address each horse’s strengths and needs. From there, we do our best to find the best new home and next career based each horse's future potential.

Meet Our Horses:

Doit's Cat: "Dewey" - A 15.2 hand thoroughbred gelding that we took from the track in July, 2014.  This beautiful boy is only 3 years old and never saw his first race. He was at risk of being sold to a non-forever home until we stepped in.  This boy is as quiet and sweet as they come!  He is so gentle with everyone on the ground and has a very kind eye.  He will need time to grow but will be the ultimate companion for his new owner.

We are in need of some basic essentials for him such as fly spray, halter, lead rope, and bell boots.  Please consider helping Dewey and support his care!

Mile High Mojo: “Mojo” - A 17.3 hand (YES that tall) thoroughbred gelding was placed in our aftercare program in November 2013. We had a few rehabilitation needs to address with him including an increased challenge of being underweight, body soreness coupled with weak hind end muscles, and finally ear mites that led to active lesions in his ears. These lesions caused his ears to become so painful that he didn't allow many people to touch his ears or put a halter/bridle on him. We have worked over the past year on addressing any soundness issues and recently worked on clearing up the lesions in his ears. His rehabilitation costs have been great. We believe that, in the right home, Mojo has a bright and amazing future ahead of him.

Hold The Advantage: "Tex" – The newest recruit, just recently retired from racing and came into our aftercare program in May of 2014. He is a 9 year old thoroughbred gelding standing 16.2 hands and had a warhorse of a career at the track with over 60 starts. This is an amazing athlete who, with the immaculate care of his trainer/owner, retired 100% sound (YES Sound) from racing! This boy got to enjoy his first turnout at CANTER Colorado after a long successful racing career. Watch his video of his first turnout since his 6 year racing career began:

Help Needed:
As we look to expand our aftercare program to help as many horses from the racing industry, we need assistance both financially and with equipment needed for their care.

Financial assistance:
Any monetary donations will go directly to vet bills, rehabilitation services, retraining efforts, hay, grain, and any vitamins or supplements to aid in the horse’s care.

$25   buys 1 bag of grain.
$50   buys 1 week of training.
$100 buys farrier services and shoes or vet vaccinations.
$250 buys 1/2 month of board, care, and feed for 1 horse.
$500 buys 1 month of full board and care for 1 horse.

Equipment assistance: We have created a wish list to collect for basic care items such as fly sheets, fly masks, and fly spray. Other horse necessities include bridles, bits, halters, lead ropes and boots. Currently we are relying on our trainer or foster care provider’s equipment and tack. We are hoping to have our own supplies and not rely on our volunteers.

All donations are tax deductible. Please making a donation to CANTER Colorado and helping our horses in need.

We can't express enough, our deep gratitude for your donation and how much your support helps the horses in our care.
