English Tea Garden Cat Cafe

Another Chance Cat Adoption began in 2006 with a few cats, a few volunteers, a few mistakes, and a lot of love.  We started with 6 cats, all of whom went on to great homes.

Since this was a groundbreaking experience we all agreed that rather than focus on volume and fast turn over the way many shelters do, we wanted each cat to be special.  Most came from some kind of heartbreak, so we kept them until they settled down and picked their adopter- which they all did. We try to take as many older, less adoptable cats as possible and do not cage except for illness, recovery or serious behavior problems.  In the event we do need to cage a cat, we try to use cages the size of large dog kennel so that the cat isn’t confined or restricted.

We carefully screen adopters and insist that no cats be declawed or go outside.  (A lot of the cats we take in have been found outside.) We have a 24 hour waiting period for all adopters and will take the cat to the new home to help with the transition. Because of screening and waiting process, we aren’t able to do large same day adoption events like larger outfits do. We see this all the time when we do go to events to raise awareness; cats are practically given away for free with little to no background research done. It’s a vicious cycle that unfortunately leads to a lot of the cats we get in.  Fundraising is difficult at these events because most people aren’t willing to wait the vetting process and 24 hour hold time.

A lot of changes are coming to ACCA this year! We are very excited for what this means to the cats. A group of students from the University of Washington volunteered to update and rejuvenate our website. (Go Huskies!) This is an incredible gift as we are more talented in the feline care world and not website care.

We also have a new location. We were lucky enough to find the perfect setting for an English Tea Garden for cats and potential adopters or visitors to get to know each other better.  The hope is to create a welcoming environment for the cats and people to open up and be more comfortable. All visitors can come in and get their latte, tea, coffee, etc. and roam about the rooms with the cats and there will be an enclosure for people and cats outside of this as well.  We want this to be an experience rather than just an adoption.  We also have an 8 x 10 house with a complete enclosure for those feral or nearly feral cats to live peacefully and safe.

These feline dreams of ours will be more attainable once we are able to secure the funds to pay for the labor and materials. The goal for our English Tea Garden is $30,000. We can’t save all of the cats, but our goal is to be able to do the very best that we can for the cats we do get in. By contributing to our cause, you will allow us to continue taking care of the cats with the funds that we do get from out normal fundraising routes.

We appreciate anything you can do to help, and the cats of ACCA say “Thank you!” (What we heard was “Meow”, but we’re pretty sure they meant thank you.)
