Derby Days 2014

Derby Days at NAU was a huge success! Overall, we raised about $19,000, but recently we have decided to keep donations open for a great cause:

A chapter brother recently went home, where he learned that a long time family friend of his, Thomas Johnston, husband of Alla Johnston of ten years, father of son Cody (18), and stepfather of 2 stepdaughters (ages 12 and 14), and a member of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department of California, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He has recently learned about his cancer status, and by the time it was discovered, it had spread throughout his body, and he has been given six months to live. He considered chemotherapy, but it would at most give him another six months or so, and the way his department's benefits are set up, he would lose all medical benefits were he to retire or quit. Therefore, he has opted not to go through chemotherapy, and will most likely still have to work until he dies. Recently, he has told our brother's mom that he has started to sell everything of value he owns to pay for his funeral. In this sad time, we want to extend a helping hand, and it seems that fate has allowed Derby Days to occur at the optimal time. This money will not only aid his hurting family in a time of need, but will allow Officer Johnston to spend time away from work and with his family. Nobody should work until death, nor should anyone have to suffer financially, although many do. We as a chapter have come to a unanimous agreement that there is no better allocation of the funds we have than to benefit the Johnston family. Normally, we would donate the Huntsman Cancer Institute, but we believe Jon Huntsman himself would approve of our new mission. We know that you have already donated thousands to our cause, and thank you for every dollar. What we have currently is a fantastic amount to give anyone, but we know that the more we raise, the easier Officer Johnston's last days will be. Thank you again for every bit of support you have given us.

This year, we will pay for the blankets made for Matt's Chemo Bags, donate approximately $500-$1000 to each of the 5 competing sororities' philanthropies of choice. The remainder will benefit Thomas Johnston and his family.
