                                             SAVE OUR URBAN FARM

Urban Oaks Organic Farm is an inner city farm in New Britain, CT, surrounded by low income apartment buildings and multi-family homes. We are an oasis of green in a drab urban landscape. Our mission is to provide healthy fresh organic foods to meet the needs of our neighbors. After a wonderful fifteen year relationship with a phenomenally generous landlord, the land will be put up for sale next spring. Our best hope to save our certified organic farm is to buy the land ourselves, but we do not have the resources. The fertile, nutrient rich soil is prime alluvial silt. When bulldozers demolish the green houses and concrete foundations are poured, our farm will be gone forever. We need your help.

We are a promise of hope in a food desert. Young families walk to our farm stand to buy pesticide-free/herbicide-free food. It is a joy to watch curious children encountering an heirloom vegetable for the first time. They want to touch it, smell it and bring it home to taste it. Our customers from all walks of life happily exchange recipes and tips on how to prepare the wide assortment of fresh vegetables. The affirmative role of the farm in the neighborhood cannot be overstated. We want to stay where we are and keep our mission going. We need your help.

Here is what we have: three and a half acres of fertile, nutrient-rich soil that has been carefully tended with organic practices for over fifteen years; seven on-site greenhouses; a year-round on-site farmers' market; a grant provided mobile market that visits neighborhood sites; and a variety of educational programs with local public schools. It will be heartbreaking to lose all this. We need your help.

All proceeds from our sales go back into the farm's operations: there are no shareholders, no paid administrators at all - in fact, just a truly committed volunteer board of directors. In the past we were supported with grants, volunteer workers and donations. In good years we can break even. Our next five year plan realizes the dream of sustainability. But at this moment in time, there are no surplus funds to buy the land. We need your help.

We have created something vital here and we want to continue. For more information about our farm visit our web site www.urbanoaks.org. The prospect of coming up with sufficient funds to buy our rich and precious land is daunting. We need your help.

Please help us meet our goal and raise enough money to ensure the future of our life-sustaining, neighborhood-enriching farm. Thank you.
