SYNOPSIS:
Two storm chasers struggle to find purpose and balance in their obsession with weather as they journey through small-town America in search of tornadoes.
PROJECT OUTLINE:
Chasing Dreams isn't simply another documentary about storms, it's the story of two men trying to make sense of their irrational obsession. Beyond the adventures of tracking tornadoes, it takes an intimate look at balancing a love for something arbitrary, unpredictable, and destructive.
The film follows Jeff Mangum--a husband and father--and Jeremy Hamann--a husband and full-time student--as they travel throughout the United States Midwest in search of Jeremy’s first tornado, and Jeff’s first EF-5 tornado -- the most elusive and strongest of any storm on earth. In pursuing their life-long fascination with storms, Jeff and Jeremy begin to confront the idea of loving something that causes unspeakable destruction. As they face, first-hand, the power of these storms, they are forced to question the decision to leave their families for days at a time to drive into potentially lethal situations. How far will they go to pursue their dreams of storm chasing, and at what cost? Through interactions with friends, family and other storm chasers--and by facing some of the world’s most ferocious weather--an epic story of self-discovery unfolds.
PRODUCTION:
With one chase filmed, and no tornadoes documented, Jeff and Jeremy are all the more motivated to go back out on the road in search of storms.This is where the fundraiser comes in. In order to capture their evolving story, which could take several years, I'll need to make many more trips throughout the Midwest. The money raised here will go directly into filming the documentary, allowing me to spend the time needed to tell their entire story. Due to the nature of storm chasing, having funds available in advance will be necessary so that I can leave instantly to film any last minute chases, ensuring that the pivotal moments of their story are captured.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Gabriel Cox is the creative director and editor behind numerous short documentaries such as the YouTube viral film Jacob Chen: An Adoption Story and the short film Brooklyn's Bridge, as seen on Relevant Magazine's website. His career in advertisement and filmmaking has taken him across the U.S. to cities like New York, Los Angeles and Austin, TX where he worked alongside award winning filmmakers.
