At A Glance:
Launched in Fall 2009, Skirts and Scuffs was born from founder Katy Lindamood’s frustration over the way female fans were marginalized as being interested only in attractive drivers or following only what the men in their lives followed. The site disproves that fallacy on a daily basis by reporting breaking news and offering timely interviews with drivers and crew from both sides of the pit road wall. Fact-based opinion pieces demonstrate the contributors’ familiarity with the second-most popular spectator sport in the U.S.
Primarily focusing on the three top-tier series of NASCAR, Skirts and Scuffs also covers the IZOD IndyCar series, Formual One, and (new for the 2013 season) World of Outlaws. If there’s a storyline there, we’ll write about it, post to Facebook about it, or tweet about it.
Skirts and Scuffs was recruited in 2011 to join NASCAR’s Citizen Journalist Media Corps. According to NASCAR websites selected for this group were subjected to “a lengthy review process, which included evaluating independent Web sites on professionalism, reporting, and commentary, and use of social networking tools.” Skirts and Scuffs takes this role seriously and has established a clear set of strict guidelines which govern our first-hand reporting and in our daily interactions through the site and social media.
According to statistics presented by NASCAR an estimated 40 percent of the fanbase is comprised of women coming from all walks of life. Through the website itself and the use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, Skirts and Scuffs is dedicated to painting these women in a positive light, paying homage to the millions of fans who call the sport of NASCAR their own.
Diversity In Contributors and Content
Just like the millions of women who are dedicated to the sport of auto racing, Skirts and Scuffs is comprised of fans from all walks of life. Some have been fans for decades while others have found the sport only recently. Whether new or seasoned, young or old, one thing unites our team, a passion for racing that is unparalleled.
Skirts and Scuffs includes 18 writers and three staff photographers who reside across the United States. Writers include a 20-year veteran of the Navy currently serving as a reservist, a newspaper copy editor, a retail sales associate, college students, Public Relations specialists, and published authors
How We Operate
Skirts and Scuffs is staffed by a team of women who volunteer their time and services in an effort to further a common goal. Because of this the members of the team are not monetarily compensated for their writing and are required to pay for any race travel out of their own pockets.
On an average weekend it can cost writers traveling on media credentials between $300 - $500 for three days at the track including hotel accommodations and fuel. For this reason Skirts and Scuffs depends heavily on advertising revenue and private donations to ease the financial burden incurred during a live coverage weekend.
We'd like to thank those who made donations during the 2012 racing season. We raised $1035 in our initial campaign through GoFundMe.
