Flood devastates Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy Columbia Campus.
Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy is an elementary school (Preschool to Grade 8) on four campuses in Dorchester and Mattapan. Our mission is to provide an excellent education to our 1,200 students in a safe, nurturing, structured, and culturally diverse environment.
A high-pressure sprinkler pipe burst on the fourth floor in the Columbia Road Campus on February 16, 2015, sending a cascade of water throughout the former St. Margaret's School building, destroying large sections of classroom space, and leaving the campus' main building "uninhabitable." Repair costs will run into the millions of dollars and take many months to complete.
The incident triggered a crisis for Sister Ellen Powers, CSJ, Regional Director of the Academy who sought to relocate 358 students, and 28 faculty members and staff.
A plan was devised to keep the school's youngest pupils, Preschool to Grade 1 (ages 2.9-6 years) housed on the Columbia Road campus in a newer annex building that was not damaged in the flood. Students in grades 2-8, (ages 7-13 years) however, are attending classes at St. Mary's School at Our Lady of Czestochowa parish in South Boston, about five blocks from the annex. We are grateful for their support!
We welcome donations of school supplies, gift cards (Staples, Barnes & Noble, Lakeshore, Amazon), and cash/check donations. Checks may be made to: Sister Ellen Emergency Fund, Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy, Regional Office, 2200 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02124.
This has been a devastating blow to our community but we are moving forward and will be stronger in the end.
