Protecting Ryan's Religious Liberty

My friend, Ryan Roberts was “fired” for saying “Jesus.” It’s that simple.
I was utterly shocked when I heard a man was fired from my hometown for mentioning Jesus during a speech at the local high school. However, I was not surprised when I heard it was my good buddy, Ryan Roberts.
When giving a speech on the topic of stress and pressure at Keller High School on March 30th, Ryan simply mentioned the name of Jesus, something that was deemed so offensive to students it rendered a letter from the school principal to parents. That’s right, simply mentioning the name of Jesus had students and families so offended that, according to the principal’s letter, Ryan was fired from the third party organization that hired him to speak.
No one could’ve imagined this would be happening in Keller, Texas!
There has been a lot of focus on how this is all due to a breach of trust, and that it is not about religious liberty. But what has been very clear from the beginning, it IS about religious liberty. There is no question that Ryan is passionate about three things in life - God, family, and football. Ryan never stops sharing about the good things God has done in his life.
But he didn’t speak to this junior class about becoming a Christian or give them a religious lesson. Ryan merely mentioned Jesus once in the hour long presentation.
If Ryan was just a random speaker hired from out of town with no relationship with the school that would be one thing, but Ryan is a graduate of Keller High School and was even a decorated quarterback of their football team. He’s been in Keller for the majority of his life and trains athletes at several the KISD campuses. Even if you’re not a Christian, you have to wonder: why are we punishing people for just one word? Whatever that word is. Even if it’s Jesus.
This is about religious liberty.
